History

On 30 June 1815, the Supreme Court of Norway convened for the first time. This was an important step for a new and independent nation.

The opening took place in borrowed premises, in the library of the Cathedral School in Kristiania, which was the capital's name at the time.

The Supreme Court became the last of the state institutions to move into its own building

Johan Randulf Bull (1749–1829), who had held the high position of stiftamtmann in Bergen, became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Together with six other justices, he was appointed by the King in Council on 27 September 1814.
