The Supreme Court in 1814

During the Union with Denmark, Norway and Denmark shared a common Supreme Court in Copenhagen. Following the dissolution of the union under the Treaty of Kiel on 14 January 1814, Norway established its own Supreme Court.

The establishment of a national Supreme Court was an important element in the building of an independent Norwegian state and formed part of the constitutional order established under the Constitution adopted at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814.
