Advocates

As a court of precedent, the Supreme Court hears cases involving issues of significance beyond the case at hand, as well as cases that otherwise merit consideration by the Court.

This places high demands on all participants in appellate proceedings, in both civil and criminal cases. Advocates appearing before the Supreme Court are expected to have a thorough knowledge of the case, excellent legal skills, substantial courtroom experience, and a strong command of appellate advocacy.

The Supreme Court has prepared guidelines for advocates (in Norwegian only). The guidelines are intended to provide a foundation for acquiring the desired qualifications and to promote effective cooperation between the Court and counsel. They address a wide range of practical issues relating to written and oral submissions, case preparation, and proceedings before the Supreme Court. They also offer practical advice on effective advocacy before the Court.
